Laser printer technology is based on the process used to make a Xerox copy of a document. It was developed by in the 1930s by patent attorney Chester Carlson as an easier way to make carbon copies of patent applications.
A metal drum inside the printer or copier receives a static charge. A bright light -- shined against the paper to be copied -- reflects off the white parts of the paper and strikes the drum, demagnetizing the sections where the light hits. A finely powdered toner attaches to the still-magnetized areas of the drum (corresponding to the dark areas in the original document), and the powder transfers from the drum to the sheet of paper and melts onto the paper.
Laser printers use the same principle, but instead of the light reflecting off a sheet of paper onto the drum, a laser paints the image on the magnetized drum.
The main advantages of laser printers are speed, precision and economy. A laser can move with much greater speed than an ink jet. And because the laser beam has an unvarying diameter, it can draw more precisely, without spilling any excess ink.
There are very few disadvantages to owning a laser printer in general but one of them is definitely the cost. The money that you could spend on a very high-end inkjet printer will only buy you a very low-end color laser printer with limited capacities. Color laser printers with multi-functions such as a copier and a fax all in one are even more expensive. However a middle of the line black and white laser printer is comparable to the price of a top of the line color inkjet printer.
Toner cartridges for laser printers are available in compatible and re-manufactured versions as well. Typical savings for buying these are between 30 and 50% over buying brand new. There again, with substantially less overhead than typical brick and mortar retailers, online retailers can offer an even greater savings.
Choosing the right printer can be a daunting task. There are several different types of printing technology to choose from, each suited for different needs.
One of the best ways to get information about printers is online. Some manufacturer sites have solution advisors that allow you to select criteria like price, interface and type of printer, and then search for models that match your specifications.
